|
| 27 - 4 - 06 IMPORTANT MAY PRACTICE NEWS |
Due to the fact that we have the RAF racing with us at the May meeting we will have to stop Saturday practice slightly early due to their traditional four hour Prokart endurance on Saturday night. Practice will therefore conclude at some point between 4:30 and 5pm.
Please get to the track early on Saturday 27th May if you wish to practice as we also have a round of the Biland Super Series on the weekend so the track will be busy from opening time at 10am.
The RAF Endurance is open to club members with the following regulations:
Drivers must be 16 and have an MSA license, although an Endurance License will do and they cost £10. Single engine Honda karts are allowed and all classes (Prokarts and singles) run on Maxxis HG1 (white) slicks, which can be bought on the weekend.
Entry fee for club teams is £60 and the minimum weight limit for a team is 400 kilos (kart and all drivers). Club teams don’t have to be part of the RAF Club and therefore don’t have to have a member of the RAF on their team although you won’t be counted on the official results. If there are six teams entered from the club however, the RAF will create an extra class for the club teams to race in.
The race is four hours and will start at around 5/5:30pm depending on when practice finishes. |

This is a fantastic opportunity for drivers to sample Llandow’s extended 1100 metre circuit and the club’s friendly atmosphere as well as get experience of the track ahead of the Welsh Championships (Jul 15-16), the ABkC Internations (Sept 1-3), the NKF (Sept 17) the Biland O Plate (Oct 29) and the Celtic Championship (Dec 10), all of which take place at Llandow this year.
Entry Fees are £80 per driver, including a full day of practice on Saturday and £65 for a second family member with big grids guaranteed in both Honda classes.
Honda engines must comply with the Ratpro Honda technical regulations dated February 2005 Issue 2 as published on the Ratpro website. Please note this is not as per the MSA Gold Book.

In the Senior class, E, K and T spec engines are allowed but no volumising while in Junior Honda it is T1 engines only, fitted with three GX160 head gaskets (minimum of 1 mm each).
In the senior class, there are 12+ entries already, so get your entries in soon, this is going to be a great race!
In juniors we have 5 entries so far, with a minimum of 6 drivers required for the class to go ahead. |
| 27 - 4 - 06 More signatures needed. |
The ABkC have passed a new ruling whereby competitors need to have their five signatures plus ARKS test to move on from novice status and gain qualifications for a National A licence, plus another five race signatures before they are allowed to enter national championships.
Competitors looking to enter the 2007 Super One or BRDC Stars of Tomorrow are therefore pre-warned of the need to collect these signatures. |

| 27 - 4 - 06 New age and weight limits? |
Recommendations are being put forward to the Kart Sporting Committee to increase the upper age for Cadet classes to the end of the year of the 13th birthday so smaller young drivers can stay in the class if desired.
It is also likely that the 2007 junior class Regs will include a maximum kart weight including ballast so small drivers do not progress into a class where they would be forced to carry too much ballast. The maximum ballast per kart is likely to be set somewhere between 25kg and 30kg. |
| 27 - 4 - 06 The wettest ever?? |
The 2006 season at Llandow narrowly avoided being thrown into disarray last month as some of the heaviest rains ever seen at the circuit threatened to call a halt to proceedings before the finals.
With the two other race meetings in the South West region also being held on March 26th falling victim to the weather, the club have earned praise from all corners for keeping the meeting going in the face of adversity.
The rains may have caused the meeting to overrun slightly, but aside from an earlier than scheduled lunchbreak, the club weren’t forced to reduce the number of laps in any of the races and as a result, avoided disappointing what was a very high entry for the month of March.
Unlike the 2004 TKM O Plate, which had to be stopped due to heavy rain in October 2004, the combination of weather radar tracking on the internet, some thorough sweeping by the marshals and a slight alteration to the warm-up lap procedure, allowed the meeting to proceed as normal with skies even brightening for the last couple of finals.
Two drivers may have packed up and gone home early, claiming that conditions were too dangerous to race in, but the remaining 58 stayed, a decision that especially pleased many of the Cadet and Junior dads who were eager to give their drivers the extra wet weather experience.
Apart from one incident in the third Formula Rotax heat when Chris Davies piled into a broadside Dan Stacey coming out of the NGK Kink before slamming into the tyre barriers protecting the unused marshal point on the inside of Raymond’s hairpin and another in the Junior TKM Four Stroke final, all the wet weather races ran without injury, further vindicating the decision to press on with the meeting.
However, the rains did highlight several areas of the track where drainage will need to improve, notably on the warm-up lap cut-through at the bottom of the circuit and the run from the first new corner into McWhirters. The usual puddles on the entrance to The Hook and on the exit of Chandlers were also a concern when coupled to the rivers running backwards down the track from McWhiters to the first new corner as well as another stream flowing from left to right half way down the run to Chandlers.
“The Club would like to extend its thanks to the race officials for keeping the meeting running,” stated a rather damp spokesperson on Sunday evening. “We had some luck with the weather in the end and we can learn a lot from today for when the next time the Welsh weather lives up to its reputation.” |
| 16 - 3 - 06 TIME-ly request from Llandow. |
Llandow Kart Club are seeking assistance in their efforts to bolster the number of race weekend officials at the club.
A trainee timekeeper is sought in order to help Margaret Evans as are club stewards, on-track observers and scrutineers so as to ease the load on our current roster.
Any enquiries should be directed to Hardy Rodde, Richard Dowers or Peter Jones. |
| 10 - 3 - 06 Don't Forget |
Although John Goddard gave many drivers a break in February, all competitors MUST have steering column safety collets AND metal seat plates on their karts in March.

Competitors have been reminded about keeping clear and easily readable numbers on their karts after several cases of mistaken identity in February.
Ripped, torn and scuffed numbers must be replaced during the day as drivers can be penalised for not displaying clear digits.
|
| 6 - 3 - 06 No new WTP....Yet. |
Following further tests with the new Cadet WTP B5 engine the MSA have deferred the introduction of the new engine until further notice.
The new engine was due to come on line on March 1st this year and all Cadet WTP drivers will now continue to run to the 2005 MSA regulations
|
| 6 - 3 - 06 MSA Announces Changes |
The MSA have made several amendments to the 2006 ‘Blue Book’ including changing the Junior Gearbox wet tyre from a Dunlop KT8 to a Dunlop KT10 and several amendments to the Rotax regulations.
Changes for the Max classes include clarification on the Dell’orto VHSB 34 QD or QS carburettors and the introduction of a rule permitting competitors to have a single 8mm maximum diameter hole positioned in a central location of the lower half of the airbox using the area of the injection mould marks as a guide. |

| 1 - 3 - 06 Smoothly does it |
Llandow Kart Club will be making changes to their racing surface for the second year in succession this summer as ‘Last Lap’ can exclusively reveal plans to remove several of the teeth rattling bumps that currently reside in the cut through used on warm-up laps and the first lap of the races.
With the debut for the Super ICC class and the arrival of the well-supported Northern Kart Federation Gearbox Championship in September expected to draw grids of 30, the resurfacing is essential for safety reasons.
Already the ICC Karts are getting airborne through the cut-through, and there are fears that with a large grid of the 100mph beasts, the destabalising effects of the bumps could trigger a major accident.
South Wales Karting Centre has already increased the height of the tyre barrier on the outside of the cut-through especially for the Gearbox classes and other additions to the barriers could also be put in place in the coming weeks.
The cut-through, which was introduced during the 2003 season in an effort to halt the number of accidents occuring in the Hook on the first lap, but while the new tarmac alleviated one set of problems, it did create several new ones.
In September 2003 Prokarter Nigel Kent was tipped upside down during practice going through the new section and was lucky to escape serious injury while in April last year, Cadet drivers JJ Wilson and Macaulay Austin both went off at high speed after the cut-through and were also lucky to escape injury.
In August 2005 when Stars of Tomorrow made their third visit to the track and their first with the ICC Gearbox class, the bumps in the cut-through were among the only criticisms of the new circuit and with that championship almost certainly set to return to Llandow in 2007, the resurfacing could be a key feather in Llandow’s cap as the circuit continues to try and establish itself as a permanent fixture on every major championship calendar in the country.
In addition to the cut-through resurfacing, speculation continues to mount over the future of Raymond’s famous slippery surface as well as the track in the NGK Kink, which appears to have become even greasier over the winter months.
While the circuit is trying to push for a complete resurfacing project from the exit of The Dell to the Start/Finish line in an effort to halt the number of accidents seen on the corporate karts, especially in the wet, many MSA drivers see the different surface as an extra challenge of what is already an extremely difficult circuit to find a good balance for.
|
| 1 - 2 - 06 Nicholas Jones: Racing Driver |
Llandow KC member Nick Jones passed his ARDS test in January at the Anglesey circuit in North Wales.
After several test drives in Proton’s and Mini’s, Nick passed the test first time with Andrew Crighton’s Advent Motorsport team but turned down the offer of a race drive in favour of focusing on exams and challenging for Llandow’s Senior Prokart title.
Quite right too!
|
| 1 - 2 - 06 Incoming!!!! |
More than half of the ten club rounds this year will enjoy visits from outside series, something that will help bolster grids throughout the year.
The lucrative Biland Super Series will race twice at Llandow during the course of the year, as will the NKRA Southern Regional runners while the NKF Gearbox classes and the Honda O Plate will enjoy a single visit to the circuit. All series will run alongside club meetings.
|
| 1 - 2 - 06 Fancy a go at marshalling??? |
Llandow KC want to increase their roster of marshals in 2006.
In addition to the ten club rounds, Llandow will also play host to the Welsh Championships, the Celtic Championship, the Internations, Club 100 as well as the British Mini Moto and Metrakit Championships.
Ideally the club are looking for people who can commit to most, if not all, 17 ‘race’ weekends in 2006. If any of the current members have an enthusiastic friend/relative who may be up for the task, let us know.
All marshals must be 16 years of age and have a genuine passion for karting and motorsport in general.
Any enquiries should be directed to Henry in the main office. |
| 1 - 2 - 06 Happy Birthday karting |
The sport of karting reaches its half century in 2006, as it celebrates its 50th birthday.
American Art Ingles built the first modern kart in 1956, designed for use around his factory floor, with Britain catching the bug soon after. |
| 1 - 2 - 06 Track attack'd |
South Wales Karting Centre is one of the qualifying circuits for the new Red Bull Track Attack initiative, designed to find the best amateur karter in Britain.
The competition, which is not open to MSA license holders, but IS open to all karting mums and dads, runs until the end of March.
|
| 1 - 2 - 06 Get well Mr Maund |
There will be two very familiar faces missing from Sunday’s meeting, those of regular club stewards Mr and Mrs Maund.
During the off-season, Harry Maund tripped and tore his Achilles tendon, further aggravating the injury with another fall, leaving him with both legs in plaster.
Although Harry is well on the way to recovery, and hopes to be fit in time for the March meeting, both he and Mrs Maund have been forced to sit the 2006 season opener out.
|
| 1 - 2 - 06 Llandow at Autosport Show |
Llandow Kart Club would like to thank all those who helped out or just came along for a chat at the recent Autosport International Show in Birmingham.
Thanks to the Welsh Development Agency, LKC were allowed to display a kart and publicise the club to the many thousands of people who attended the four day show.
The WDA stand was also awarded ‘Best Stand in Show’ by the organisers and the club hope to repeat the exercise in 2007. |
| 25 – 1 – 05 Loyalty cards now available. |
| The 2005 Llandow Kart Club Loyalty Card will be available from the circuit from today (Tuesday) for the princely sum of £30 British quid. Once purchased. These small pieces of green gold entitle the holder to £5 off EVERY practice session they attend during the 2005 season. |

| 05 – 1 – 05 Happy New Year |
A belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Llandow Kart Club. Thank you for your support in 2004 and we are looking forward to a new season that promises excitement for everyone. |
29 – 7 – 04 Big prizes for Senior TKM 4
Strokers in
September |
In a major effort to boost the popularity of the Senior TKM 4 Stroke class at Llandow and to try and boost the grid for October’s O Plate event, Tal-Ko will be offering some top prizes for the top three Senior TKM 4 Stroke finishers in September’s Club Meeting (19th Sept).
With several of Llandow’s top young racers currently competing in Junior TKM Four Stroke, the addition of a good Senior grid would not only boost the regular number of Club Senior classes to 4 but also give any Seniors some perfect practice time before the 24th October running of the TKM ‘O’ Plate at Llandow.
Entry forms can be sourced from Julie Lipscomb at the usual address (go on, have a look – its on here somewhere….) while interested parties can also contact Jon Honeybun (get his number from the circuit on 01446 795568) |
25 – 7 – 04 Lipscomb takes 2nd
as Super 2 hits
Llandow |
Llandow’s Chris Lipscomb’s superb run in Senior ProKart was the highlight of Super 2’s annual visit to South Wales as he overcame a season-high field of 18 to take third place in the final behind reigning Champ Paul Wilkins and Simon Bayliss. However as Wilkins isn’t registered for the Championship, he takes second place points for the overall round.
After nine of 12 rounds, Chris is now fifth overall with dropped scores taken into account.
In Cadet Honda, Carly Latcham looked good for a podium finish in the final before her chain came off, leaving her 12th in the final. However after a strong set of heats meant she salvaged 10th in points for the round.
In Junior Honda, Sophie Williams wasn’t eligible to score any points but finished a strong third in the final behind Ross Minty and Linda Playfair, the top two in the Championship while the Club’s Senior ProKart ‘wildcards,’ Tom Davenport, Henry Beaudette and Gwyn Latcham finished 16th, 17th and 18th respectively in the final. |
24 – 7 – 04 – Dan and Chris 1-2 again at F6 Clay |
Dan Jones and Chris Evans scored yet another 1-2 finish in the Intermediate Biland class of the F6 Championship on Saturday at Clay Pigeon as their season-long duel at the top of the Championship table continued.
Sophie Williams finished fourth in Junior ProKart after a first lap ‘off’ in the final although other results and overall points positions are currently inaccessible as the F6 website has had a funny turn. Sorry. |
| 22 – 7 – 04 – Lawley featured on Stars Home Page |
Just noticed that the Stars of Tomorrow website (http://www.brdc.co.uk/starsoftomorrow/index.cfm) has been redesigned and that the series have chosen to use photos from Llandow 2004 as the main photos on their home page. Adam Cristodoulou is shown leading the Junior Rotax field into The Dell but more importantly (for us anyway) Nathan Lawley is pictured heading into Chandlers and is actually positioned as the focal point for the whole page. Nice one! |
| 19 – 7 – 04 - Extra races at Super 2 weekend. |
There will be two extra races in the upcoming Super 2 weekend, one for the young and one for the….not so young.
The kids from Llandow’s Race Academy will take to the track for the first time competitively in what the Club hope will become Formula Honda Start next season. A number of dad’s and mechanics have spent many hours putting these kids through their paces and this is their first chance to shine.
There is also a special endurance race for non-licensed dads and mechanics on the Club fleet of corporate Pro-Karts. |
| 18 – 7 –04 – New Biland record for Jones |
Dan Jones shattered his own Junior Biland lap record on Sunday, wiping nearly three tenths of a second off his old margin. Jones’ final time was a 36.45 |
| 10 – 7 – 04 - Big entry for July meeting |

James Godbehere was handed the provisional Cadet win after Mayson Wear was disqualified while Kazeem Manzur claimed a narrow Mini Max victory. Junior Gearbox fell to William Hibbert over Jack Linfoot and James Harrison.
Of the local talent, Sam Taylor finished fifth in the Cadet A Final while JJ Wilson was 6th in the B Final. Dan Rodde set fastest time in his Junior Rotax qualifying group but was disqualified for an oversized carb jet. Rodde fought back to win the Pre B Final and the B Final itself and finished 16th in the A Final.
Club Stars Robert Bevan and Nathan Lawley finished 17th in the A Final and 8th in the B Final respectively in Junior Rotax while Shaun Clay claimed an impressive 13th in Mini Max.
Dafydd Iles and Michael Cox didn’t have such good fortune with Iles crashing out of the Mini Max final and ‘Coxy’ retiring on the first lap of the Junior Gearbox final after an impressive run to fourth in the pre-final.

There was better fortune for Chris Evans and Dan Jones in Intermediate Biland as Chris remained unbeaten to record another impressive victory while Jones fought from seventh on the grid in the final up to second.
In the Senior Biland class, Llandow’s Tom Griffiths finished 10th against a very strong field |

23 – 5 – 04 Llandow Karters sweep Super 1 podium
at Larkhall |
The third round of the Super 1 TKM Championship at Larkhall in Scotland saw Llandow Kart Club members take a fantastic podium clean sweep in the Junior TKM 4 Stroke A Final thanks to a third straight victory for series leader Michael Cox and career best showings from Dafydd Iles and Matthew Pritchard.
In glorious conditions ‘Coxy’ once again romped to victory in the final to increase his overall points lead over Tom Bridge to nearly 30 markers although he can thank fellow Club members Iles and Pritchard for taking valuable points away from Bridge and third place driver Alex Shackleton in the final.
Iles, who has been getting closer and closer to ‘Coxy’ everywhere they have raced in recent months, grabbed his best S1 result of the season by just one tenth of a second over Pritchard with both Shackleton and Bridge nipping at their heels in fourth and fifth places.
Kieren Karim and Emyr Honeybun both adapted well to the scenic Scottish circuit and finished tenth and eleventh respectively in the Junior TKM 4 Stroke final with Karim just eight seconds behind Cox at the chequered flag after 16 gruelling laps. |

| 16 – 05 – 04 Action heats up at Llandow |
The fourth round of the 2004 Llandow Kart Club Championship saw glorious weather and a season-high entry of nearly 80 drivers combine for a competitive and drama filled day of racing.
The on-track action wasn’t the only thing heating up however as many mechanics, spectators, mums and dads all bore the effects of a long day in the sun and sales of Aloe Vera are expected to increase greatly in the South Wales region over the next few days.
A couple of accidents brought a temporary halt to proceedings although all drivers involved were simply shaken not stirred and passed fit to play in the impromptu end-of-day game of football on the start/finish straight. (Although where they got their energy from remains a mystery).
A full report of the day’s proceedings will be posted in due course. |
15 – 5 – 04 More F6 Glory for Llandow Karters at Bayford. |
While Sunday’s Club meeting was exhausting enough in it’s own right, several drivers arrived at Llandow straight from competing in similar hot conditions in the latest round of the South East F6 Championship at Bayford Meadows in Kent.
Once again Llandow Kart Club members excelled in a Championship where pre-race testing is not allowed with Carly Latcham and Chris Evans both going undefeated in their respective classes.
Latcham swept the board in Cadet Honda for her first F6 victory and moved up to tenth in the overall standings despite already missing two rounds while Evans moved atop the Intermediate Biland standings, deposing fellow Llandow Kart Club member Dan Jones in the process.
For Evans, his Bayford victory marked his second clean sweep in as many rounds, while Jones finished fourth in the final and still holds down second in the overall standings.
Michael Cox and Dafydd Iles had drastically different fortunes in Junior TKM Four-Stroke for while Cox overcame a relatively poor (by his standards) set of heats and cruised to victory in the final, Iles retired and lost valuable ground in the overall standings. |
| 14 – 05 - 04 Entries up for May event |

Work is also continuing apace on the new commentators box, tannoys and timing screens as well as the new paddock surface. |

| 22-04-04 Evans leads Llandow F6’ers home at Lydd |
A perfect four out of four race victories sealed Chris Evans first overall F6 victory of the 2004 season in the most recent round of the South East Series at Lydd International Raceway on April 22nd. Evans led home fellow Llandow Kart Club member Dan Jones in the final and now trails series leader Jones by just 30 points in the overall standings.
There was also success for Llandow Kart Club members in Junior ProKart and Junior TKM Four Stroke as Gareth Lewis finally got one over on arch nemesis Sophie Williams to take his maiden F6 triumph and close in on series leader Aaron Smith in the Honda powered class. In Junior TKM Four Stroke Matt Pritchard and Dafydd Iles finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the final. |
